Municipality of Elassona

The Municipality of Elassona geographically occupies the northwestern part of the Region of Thessaly, with its seat being the city of Elassona. The Kallikratis Municipality of Elassona[*] was formed by the merger of the pre-existing municipalities of Antichasia, Elassona, Livadi, Olympus, Potamia, Sarantaporo, and the communities of Verdikoussa, Karya, and Tsaritsani[**]. Thus, it is comprised of a total of 9 Municipal Units and 60 settlements. According to the Hellenic Statistical Authority (2011 census), the total permanent population of the Municipality is 32,121 inhabitants, and its area amounts to 1,568.14 square kilometers.

[*] The abolished Kapodistrian Municipality of Elassona was structured into a total of 8 Municipal Departments and 13 settlements.

[**] The settlement of Tsaritsani belonged to the Municipality of Elassona until March 15, 2006. Subsequently, with Law 3448/15-3-2006, Tsaritsani was separated from the Municipality of Elassona and became a distinct community for historical reasons.

The Municipality of Elassona is characterized by intense relief, since most of it (78%) is characterized as mountainous (38%) and semi-mountainous (40%), while only a few areas are lowland (22%).In the area you find the highest mountain in Greece, Mount Olympus and even some of its highest peaks (Mytikas 2917 m., Skolio 2911 m., Frangou Aloni 2684 m.). The mountainography of the province is complemented by the mountains of Titarus, Kamvounia, Antichasia and the heights of Meluna.

The Municipality of Elassona is a unique point of reference for the activities of the residents of the wider area of the northern part of the Region of Thessaly. This specificity, which was shaped and evolved historically on the basis of local conditions, has important social and economic implications in the current situation. In particular, the seat of the Municipality – Elassona – has now been transformed into a transport hub of local and supralocal character, since it is a connection point between central and northwestern Greece. It has a remarkable local market where most of the economic transactions of the region are concentrated and, consequently, is the center of all local social relations.

Thanks to the help of development programs financed by national and Community authorities, investments in various sectors of the economy are currently being implemented in the wider area of Elassona.

Both the infrastructure projects that are or will be implemented in the city, as well as in the other settlements, aim to give the Municipality a modern look in order to become an evolving dynamic area that will provide a high level of quality of life to both residents and visitors.

The Municipality of Elassona presents unique geophysical features and natural beauties. In Elassona, the seat of the Municipality, many remarkable projects have already been completed and the execution of many more infrastructure projects continues (drainage of Elassona, Biological Treatment, Waste Transhipment Station, replacement of water supply network, etc.).
