The Elassona area offers many hiking routes that showcase the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Mount Olympus. One of the most popular trails begins in the village of Kalyvia and ends at the Christakis refuge, passing through an enchanting beech and fir forest. This particular route is of moderate difficulty and provides breathtaking views of the mountain’s peaks. Another impressive trail is the path leading from Elassona to the “Petralona” site and continuing toward the “Old Panteleimon” settlement. For more demanding climbers, the ascent from the “Karya” location to the higher peaks, such as Mytikas, via the E4 trail, is a challenge and an excellent opportunity to experience the mythical mountain. Mountaineering on Mt Olympus, particularly in the Elassona region, offers unique experiences for nature and adventure enthusiasts. This area serves as an ideal starting point for ascents to the peaks of the mythical mountain, as it provides access to well-marked trails and organized mountain shelters. 
 
One of the most well-known routes is the ascent from the village of Karya to the Christakis refuge, followed by a climb to the higher peaks, such as Saint Antonios (2,817 m), which offers panoramic views of the entire Olympus range and the surrounding area. For more demanding mountaineers, the E4 trail, which passes through Elassona, is an excellent option, as it connects the western side of the mountain to the highest peaks, such as Mytikas (2,918 m), the highest peak in Greece.  

The history of mountaineering on Olympus dates back to the early 20th century, when the first organized expeditions by Greek and foreign climbers recorded the first ascent to the peak of Mytikas in 1913, by Christos Kakalos and the Swiss climbers Frederic Boissonas and Daniel Baud-Bovy. Olympus quickly became an international destination for mountaineering, and the establishment of the Olympus National Park in 1938 marked a milestone for the protection of the mountain and the promotion of organized mountaineering in the region.
